How to Start Driving Lessons - Step by Step

Starting your driving journey can feel overwhelming, but with the right guidance, it becomes simple and enjoyable. At S.London Driving School, we support you every step of the way — from your first lesson all the way to passing your test and beyond.

Step 1: Apply for Your Provisional Driving Licence

Before you can begin driving lessons, you must apply for your provisional licence.

Apply online via the DVLA (quickest and easiest method)

You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old

You can legally start driving a car at 17

*If you receive the higher rate mobility component of PIP, you can start driving at 16*

🟠 Most applications are processed within 1–2 weeks

Step 2: Book Your Driving Lessons
Once your provisional licence arrives, you’re ready to get started.
Contact S.London Driving School to book your first lesson
Choose flexible lesson times that fit around your schedule
We offer convenient pick-up and drop-off locations (home, work, school, etc.)

🟠 We recommend a minimum of 2 hours per week to build confidence and progress quickly

Step 3: Learn the Basics
Your instructor will guide you from complete beginner level, building your confidence step by step.

You’ll cover:
Cockpit drill (setting up the seat, mirrors, and controls)
Moving off and stopping safely
Clutch control and smooth gear changes
Steering techniques and road positioning
Basic junction awareness

🟠 No prior experience is needed — we tailor every lesson to your ability

Step 4: Pass Your Theory Test
You can take your theory test before or during your driving lessons.

The test includes:
Multiple-choice questions based on the Highway Code
Hazard perception clips to test your awareness

🟠 We strongly recommend completing your theory test as early as possible, as there can often be long waiting times for practical driving tests. Passing early allows you to secure a test date sooner and avoid delays.

🟠 We’ll guide you on the best apps, revision tools, and techniques to help you pass first time

Step 5: Build Your Driving Skills
As your confidence grows, your lessons will progress to more advanced driving situations.
You’ll learn:

Navigating junctions and roundabouts safely
Parking manoeuvres (bay parking, parallel parking, pull up on the right, etc.)
Dual carriageways and higher-speed roads
Anticipation, planning and hazard awareness
Independent driving using sat nav and road signs

🟠 Your instructor will continuously assess your progress and prepare you to test standard

Step 6: Book Your Practical Driving Test
Once your instructor confirms you are ready:
Book your test at a local test centre
Choose a suitable date and time

🟠 Due to high demand, test waiting times can be long — we can assist in finding earlier test dates where possible

Step 7: Final Preparation (Mock Tests)
Before your test, we carry out realistic mock driving tests under exam conditions.
This helps you:

Get familiar with the test format
Build confidence and reduce nerves
Identify and correct any final weaknesses
Gain experience on local test routes

Step 8: Pass Your Driving Test
On the day of your test:

You’ll use your instructor’s car (fully insured and test-ready)
Demonstrate safe, confident driving
Complete an eyesight check, “show me, tell me” questions and the drive itself

🟠 Once you pass, you’ll be ready to drive independently — a huge life milestone!

Step 9: Take the Pass Plus Scheme (Highly Recommended)
Passing your test is just the beginning. We offer the Pass Plus Scheme to help newly qualified drivers gain further experience and confidence on the road.
The course is structured and practical, covering:
Town driving in busy traffic
Rural roads and country lanes
Dual carriageways
Motorway driving
Night driving (where possible)
Driving in all weather conditions (where possible)

🟠 This course helps you develop real-world driving skills that go beyond the test
🟠 Ideal for nervous drivers or those wanting extra reassurance after passing
🟠 May help reduce your car insurance premiums (depending on insurer)
🟠 Completed at your own pace with no test at the end — just practical coaching
